Starfish

The sea is like, uh, yellow,
not the yellow which reflects
a sun off to one side somewhere,
but yellow in and of itself,
and I'm thinking maybe it's algae
or something that's gone wrong,

like when the starfish began eating
the coral off the great Australian barrier reef,
and the newspapers said the world
was going to die if all the coral got chewed up,
and divers went down
to pry the starfish from the reefs.

I don't know how you'd kill a starfish,
stick something through it, maybe,
but I'm wondering how it feels
to be torn away from whatever you're making
a meal of at the time. Maybe you hope
the pieces you find yourself in
will somehow turn into something whole.
